strange thing happened on the way to the art gallery: art has become fun again. Not only can you enjoy it for less then a month’s rent, but also you can wear it home. A new wave of artists are adding an accessible spin to the definition of "fine art" by borrowing techinques from comic books and marketing their art directly to consumers.
Take Tokyo-based pop artist Yoshitomo Nara, who’s doe-eyed, yet malicious toddlers you may have seen looking up at you from the shelves of the hippest design stores. Adorning everything from ashtrays to t-shirts, the characters lifted from his paintings offer a provocative reflection on the innocence and nastiness of childhood in a satisfying accessible format.
Also occupying the grey area between high and low art is James Jean. His world of cartoon figures and shaky line drawings can be seen on the covers of CD's, comics and coffee table art books alike.
So, free your mind from old notions of what “art” is and bring home some “fine” art today.
